DPIN: Designated Partner Identification Number for LLPs

DPIN is the identification number a designated partner of an LLP must hold. An existing DIN is accepted as DPIN, and one number covers both roles.

Short answer

A DPIN (Designated Partner Identification Number) is the identification number that every designated partner of a limited liability partnership must hold under section 7 of the LLP Act, 2008. Since the MCA integrated the two systems, the Director Identification Number serves as the DPIN, so a person who already has a DIN does not need a separate number.

Two, at least one resident in India

How a DPIN is obtained

For a new LLP, DPINs for up to two proposed designated partners can be applied for within the FiLLiP incorporation form, with identity proof, address proof and digital signatures. For a person joining an existing LLP, the number is obtained through Form DIR-3. A person who already has a DIN simply quotes it.

Because one number covers both roles, the KYC rules for DIN also apply. DIR-3 KYC is now filed once every three financial years by 30 June, with updates within 30 days when contact details change.

Who needs a DPIN

Every LLP must have at least two designated partners who are individuals, and at least one of them must be resident in India. Designated partners are responsible for the LLP's compliance, including filing Form 8 and Form 11 and keeping proper books. A body corporate partner can nominate an individual to act as designated partner, and that individual needs a DPIN.

Why it matters for startups

Many founders begin with an LLP for low compliance and later convert to a private limited company to raise equity. Holding a single DIN or DPIN makes that transition smoother, because the same number carries over when designated partners become directors of the converted company.

Common questions

Is DPIN different from DIN?

Not in practice. The DIN allotted under the Companies Act is used as the DPIN, so one number covers both.

Can a foreign national get a DPIN?

Yes, with passport and apostilled or notarised documents. However, at least one designated partner must be resident in India.

Do ordinary partners of an LLP need a DPIN?

No. Only designated partners need it. Other partners are recorded in the LLP's filings without a DPIN.
