Short answer

LLPIN (Limited Liability Partnership Identification Number) is the unique number allotted by the Registrar to every LLP registered under the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008. It uses a seven-character format of three letters and four digits, such as AAB-1234, and appears on the certificate of incorporation. An LLP uses it in every MCA filing.

Forms 3, 4, 8, 11 and other LLP filings

How the LLPIN is allotted

An LLP is incorporated by filing Form FiLLiP on the MCA portal after the name is reserved. On approval, the Registrar issues a certificate of incorporation carrying the LLPIN, and the LLP's PAN and TAN are allotted through the same process. Foreign LLPs registering a place of business in India receive an FLLPIN instead.

Unlike the 21-character CIN of a company, the LLPIN does not encode the state, industry or year of registration. To see those details, you need to look up the LLP's master data on the MCA portal.

Where you need the LLPIN

The LLPIN identifies the LLP across all its regulatory filings, and the MCA portal uses it to pre-fill master data in each form. Keep it handy for these recurring and event-based filings.

  • Form 3 for the LLP agreement, within 30 days of incorporation
  • Form 11 annual return, due by 30 May
  • Form 8 statement of account and solvency, due by 30 October
  • Form 4 for changes in partners
  • Letterheads, invoices and bank documents

Why it matters for startups

Clients, banks and payment platforms verify an LLP by its LLPIN on the MCA portal. If you later convert the LLP into a private limited company under section 366 of the Companies Act, the new company gets a CIN, and you will need to update GST, bank and contract records with the new identity. Keep the LLPIN on file even after conversion, because older contracts and tax records will refer to it.

Common questions

Is LLPIN the same as CIN?

No. CIN is for companies and has 21 characters. LLPIN is for LLPs and has seven characters.

How do I search an LLP by LLPIN?

Use the master data search on the MCA portal and choose LLP. It shows the LLP's status, partners and filing history.

Does the LLPIN change if partners change?

No. The LLPIN stays the same for the life of the LLP, regardless of changes in partners or registered office.
