Short answer

Apply for DPIIT recognition through the National Single Window System at no cost. Your company, LLP, registered partnership or cooperative society must be up to 10 years old with turnover below ₹200 crore in every year (20 years and ₹300 crore for deep tech), must work on innovation or a scalable model, and must not be formed by splitting an existing business.

Who is eligible?

DPIIT revised the startup definition by notification G.S.R. 108(E) in February 2026. An entity qualifies for up to ten years from incorporation or registration if its turnover has not exceeded ₹200 crore in any financial year, up from ₹100 crore. A new deep tech category allows 20 years and ₹300 crore for ventures built on new scientific or engineering knowledge with high R&D spend and significant novel IP. Cooperative societies are now eligible alongside companies, LLPs and partnership firms.

What does 'innovation' mean here?

The entity must be working towards innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or have a scalable business model with high potential for employment or wealth creation. Reselling, trading or a standard service business without a differentiator is often rejected. The application asks you to explain the problem, your solution, how it is innovative and how it scales, so write specifically and support claims with evidence such as patents, pilots or revenue.

Documents and information

The portal states that supporting documents must be uploaded with the application. In practice, prepare the items below in PDF form before you start, so the form can be completed in one sitting.

  • Certificate of incorporation or registration
  • Entity PAN
  • Details of directors or partners with contact information
  • Brief write-up on the innovation and scalability
  • Pitch deck, website or product video link
  • Patent, trademark or design filings, if any
  • Proof of funding, awards or incubation, if any

Benefits of recognition

Recognition is the gateway to several benefits. The income tax holiday requires a separate certificate from the Inter-Ministerial Board, and recognition alone is not enough. Other benefits include self-certification under certain labour and environment laws, fee concessions and expedited examination for patents and trademarks, relaxed norms in public procurement, access to the Fund of Funds through SEBI-registered funds, the ability to issue convertible notes, ESOPs to founder-directors for ten years and sweat equity up to 50% of capital.

After you apply

Applications are reviewed by DPIIT and may draw queries; reply on the portal. On approval, a certificate of recognition is issued with a DIPP or DPIIT number. Existing recognised startups do not need to reapply under the 2026 framework but should check their status and validity on the portal. Recognition ends when the entity crosses the age or turnover limits.

Timeline

The application itself takes an hour or two if documents are ready. DPIIT processing time is not fixed on the portal, and queries add time, so apply well before you need the certificate for a tax, procurement or fundraising purpose. Keep the recognition number handy for later applications such as the IMB certificate and fee concessions at the trademark and patent offices.

Common mistakes

Vague innovation descriptions, an entity type that is not eligible (such as a sole proprietorship or an unregistered firm), and paying an intermediary who claims special access are common pitfalls. The government charges no fee and has said no agency is authorised to process applications on its behalf.
