Short answer

Startup India recognition is the certification by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) that an entity is a startup. Under the revised framework notified by G.S.R. 108(E) dated 4 February 2026, an eligible entity must be up to 10 years old, with turnover never above ₹200 crore, working on innovation or a scalable model.

Notification
G.S.R. 108(E), 4 February 2026
Age
Up to 10 years from incorporation or registration
Turnover
Not above ₹200 crore in any financial year
Eligible entities
Companies, LLPs, partnership firms, cooperatives

Eligibility criteria

The 2026 framework supersedes the earlier definition and sets these conditions, all of which must be met. It also introduced a separate deep tech startup category with a longer age limit and higher turnover limit for technology-intensive ventures with long gestation periods.

  • Private limited company, LLP, registered partnership firm, or a cooperative or multi-state cooperative society
  • Incorporated or registered within the last 10 years
  • Turnover never exceeding ₹200 crore in any financial year
  • Working on innovation or improvement of products, processes or services, or a scalable model with high potential for jobs or wealth creation
  • Not formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business

Benefits of recognition

Recognised startups can access self-certification under specified labour and environmental laws, fast-tracked patent examination with reduced fees, relaxed norms in public procurement, and the government's Fund of Funds for Startups. Recognition is also the starting point for the startup tax holiday, which needs separate approval from the Inter-Ministerial Board. Company law gives recognised startups extra flexibility, such as granting ESOPs to promoters for ten years.

Why it matters for founders

Apply on the Startup India portal soon after incorporation, with a description of the innovation and supporting documents. Recognition can be revoked for misrepresentation or breach of conditions, so keep records updated. Note that recognition alone does not give tax exemption; that needs the separate IMB certificate.
