DSC (Digital Signature Certificate): meaning, class and uses
A DSC is an electronic signature key issued by a licensed certifying authority. Indian MCA, GST and income-tax filings use a Class 3 DSC on a USB token.
Short answer
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic key, usually stored on a USB token, that lets a person sign documents online with legal validity under the Information Technology Act, 2000. In India, directors, designated partners and professionals use a Class 3 DSC to sign MCA forms, and companies use one for GST and income-tax filings.

How a DSC works
A DSC is issued by a certifying authority licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities under the Ministry of Electronics and IT. The applicant completes an online application, Aadhaar or document-based verification, and a short video verification. The certificate is then downloaded onto a cryptographic USB token protected by a PIN.
When a director signs an MCA form, the signing utility uses the private key on the token to create a signature that the portal verifies against the public certificate. If the certificate has expired or been revoked, the form is rejected.
Where DSCs are needed
A DSC is mandatory for most company and LLP filings and is widely used in tax, procurement and intellectual property work. The main places a founder or director will need one are listed below.
- SPICe+ and FiLLiP incorporation forms
- Annual ROC filings such as AOC-4 and MGT-7
- DIR-3 and DIR-3 KYC
- Income-tax returns of companies and audited cases
- GST registration and returns of companies and LLPs
- E-tenders and trademark filings
Why it matters for startups
Expired or misplaced DSCs are a common cause of last-minute filing delays. Track expiry dates for every director, keep tokens with the individuals they belong to, and register each new DSC on the MCA and tax portals before the filing season. Never share the token PIN with anyone you would not authorise to sign on your behalf.

Common questions
Is Class 2 DSC still valid?
No. The Controller of Certifying Authorities discontinued Class 2 certificates from 1 January 2021, and Class 3 is now used for MCA and tax filings.
Can a foreign director get an Indian DSC?
Yes. Certifying authorities issue DSCs to foreign nationals using passport and apostilled or notarised documents with video verification.
Is Aadhaar e-sign the same as a DSC?
No. Aadhaar-based e-sign is a one-time OTP signature, while a DSC is a reusable certificate. MCA forms generally require a DSC.
