DPIIT Startup India Recognition vs MSME Udyam Registration: Eligibility and Benefits Compared
DPIIT startup recognition vs Udyam: up to 10 years and ₹200 crore turnover under the 2026 definition vs MSME limits up to ₹500 crore. Get both if eligible.
Short answer
They are not alternatives: an eligible business can hold both. DPIIT recognition, open to innovative companies, LLPs, firms and cooperatives up to 10 years old with turnover not above ₹200 crore, unlocks startup tax, funding and IP benefits. Udyam registration, free and open to almost every enterprise within MSME limits, unlocks priority lending, procurement preferences and delayed-payment protection.

What is each registration?
DPIIT recognition, under the Startup India initiative, certifies that an entity is a startup working on innovation, development or improvement of products, processes or services, or a scalable business model. The definition was revised by G.S.R. 108(E) on 4 February 2026, raising the turnover limit to ₹200 crore, adding cooperative societies as eligible entities, and creating a separate deep tech category with longer timelines.
Udyam registration under the MSMED Act classifies an enterprise as micro, small or medium using investment in plant and machinery or equipment and turnover. Limits were revised from 1 April 2025 by S.O. 1364(E). Registration is free, paperless and based on self-declaration using PAN and GST data.

Who qualifies for which?
A sole proprietorship cannot get DPIIT recognition, but it can register on Udyam. A company that is more than 10 years old, or has crossed ₹200 crore turnover in any year, is outside the startup definition but can remain an MSME if it is within the medium enterprise limits. An entity formed by splitting up or reconstructing an existing business is not eligible for DPIIT recognition.
Traders can register on Udyam for priority sector lending, though some MSME benefits are limited for them. Note that the delayed payment protection under the MSMED Act applies only to micro and small enterprises, not medium ones.
How do you apply for each?
DPIIT recognition is applied for on the Startup India portal with incorporation details, a brief on the innovation or scalable model, and supporting documents such as a pitch deck or website. Udyam registration is filed on the Udyam portal with the Aadhaar of the proprietor, partner or authorised signatory, and the enterprise's PAN, from which investment and turnover data are drawn.
Which should you get first?
If eligible, get both, since each is free. When choosing which to prioritise, these rules reflect what each registration is most commonly used for by Indian founders and their advisers.
- Innovative tech or product startup raising funds: DPIIT recognition first, for convertible notes, ESOP relaxations and investor comfort.
- Manufacturer, trader or service business selling to large buyers: Udyam first, for payment protection and bank finance.
- Proprietorship: Udyam only, since DPIIT recognition is not available.
- Planning to claim the startup tax holiday: DPIIT recognition, followed by an inter-ministerial board application.
- Bidding for government tenders: both can help, under different relaxations.

Common questions
Can a company have both DPIIT recognition and Udyam registration?
Yes. They are separate registrations under different frameworks, and an eligible company can hold both at the same time.
What is the new turnover limit for DPIIT startups?
Under G.S.R. 108(E) dated 4 February 2026, turnover must not exceed ₹200 crore in any financial year since incorporation, up from ₹100 crore.
Is Udyam registration mandatory?
No, it is voluntary, but it is needed to claim MSME benefits such as priority lending, delayed payment protection for micro and small units and procurement preferences.
Does DPIIT recognition automatically give a tax exemption?
No. The startup tax holiday requires a separate certificate from the inter-ministerial board, and other tax benefits have their own conditions.
