India Startup Compliance Report 2026: more founders, more filings, less time
Official 2026 data on India's startup boom, the filings every new company faces in year one, what delays cost and how Refogo helps founders stay compliant.
1. The scale of the boom
India's startup count is no longer a headline that changes once a year. In FY 2025-26 the government recognised more than 55,200 new startups. That is roughly 150 new recognitions every single day and the highest annual figure since Startup India launched in 2016.
Recognition is only the visible tip. Every one of these startups is also a registered entity with its own filing calendar. In FY 2023-24 India incorporated a record 1,85,314 companies and 58,990 LLPs, up from 1,59,339 companies and 36,249 LLPs a year earlier.
2. Where founders are building
Five states account for more than half of all recognised startups. Maharashtra leads by a distance while Uttar Pradesh has overtaken Delhi. Around half of recognised startups now come from Tier II and Tier III cities, so compliance help can no longer assume a metro address.
3. Who is founding
The number of new startups with a woman on the board has more than quadrupled since 2019. Each of those founders inherits the same filing calendar as everyone else, usually while also running sales, hiring and product.
4. The year-one compliance load
Incorporation is the easy part. The certificate arrives in days. What follows is a calendar that does not care how busy you are.
